Glorious Privilege #4 Doing – Managing – Leading
Which one is you?
A pattern of failure I have seen on many occasions is that of letting the business run the leaders not the other way round.
Arriving at your desk and letting the stream of emails and the needs of others immediacies be your guide for the day, week or year to drive you further into the weeds of your business.
And if you’re in those weeds who is looking forward – the answer …no one but all of your team and clients believe you are. And if you’re not no one is!
A rudderless ship – at the whim of the currents and winds
So what do great leaders do ?
They have a strong sense of awareness in terms of:
Doing
Managing
Leading
(NB – the difference between managing and leading is simply logistics and direction with engagement)
The best of the best compartmentalise their time into sections through out the week. They have this brilliant ability to cut from one task to another and be very much in the zone of the chosen action.
Take 5 to consider your week and how would be benefit from a more sectioned style in terms of doing, managing and leading.
Give it a go and let me know how it goes.
Get out of those weeds!

Thank you for this!
I am pleased to have returned to this method of compartmentalising- something I know worked for me in the past. I recently found myself covering two jobs in my team as well a trying to do my own, and generally survive! I struggled, and almost broke!
When i eventually reset, cleared the decks and repriotitised I found myself returning to this structured approach which felt me but familiar, and the results have been great!
I have learned that in life to try and maintain some kind of control, this structure must be protected because it’s something that’s likely to keep me working at my best, and avoid skinning into panic mode.
Wow! It sounds like compartmentalising really works for you Gerard and well done for recognising this and using it to your advantage!
Thanks for letting us know how you use this!
