Glorious Privilege – #5 The Value of Diversity 

Over the last 12 years, I have had the glorious privilege of coaching and training 1000’s of leaders. During this time I have recognised patterns of behaviour that are indicative of truly great leadership and over the next year or so I thought I would share these for you to consider and apply if you wish to.

Value of diversity 

“Be like me and you won’t go far wrong”

Probably the worst quote ever heard on so many levels – the greatest leaders we know have this incredible ability of being vulnerable enough to admit their blind spots and their “not good skill sets”.

They surround themselves with brilliance  in terms of the things they can’t or even don’t like doing.

Most entrepreneurs and instinctive leaders are very often fire starters – the ideas makers – the inspirers of our business worlds but there completer finisher skill sets are often appalling  (see Belbin team roles for more on this) 

We cannot be great in every space and when we try we often let our greatest skill become diluted or not as focused 

Celebrate diversity ask yourself what is your greatest weakness and who can support you in that space – be courageous and be vulnerable.

One of the most successful leaders I worked with when asked how did he make his fortune he simply said “I surrounded myself with a rainbow of excellence”
