The Story of Seventh-Wave®.
Picture this: it’s 2010. Nick Booth, the founder of Seventh-Wave®, and his wife, Kerry, are sat at a table. Nick decides that the current name for his company, Waypoint, is just too ‘pointy’. It implies that it is the company that is pointing the way for the individual, and not focused enough on those it trains and their role in their own self-improvement. This is not what Nick wants his company to stand for. Instead, he wants it to imply a journey, led by the trainees, and merely pushed along by the trainers. The structure of six workshops is already in place, and now the final puzzle piece needs to be placed in order to perfect the product, and that piece is the name. It’s a significant piece, so needs to be perfect.
It didn’t take long for the two to slot everything into place. Soon into the discussion, Kerry suggested the name you know and love today: Seventh-Wave®. The name came from the novel Papillon, from a specific moment where the eponymous character is attempting to escape from an island on which he has been wrongly imprisoned. He surveys the movements of the ocean for days, noticing the patterns of the waves and coming up with the best way to make it to shore. After his inspection of the ocean, he notices that every seventh wave is the one which travels the furthest, so he hatches a plan. Papillon creates a raft out of coconuts, and jumps into the ocean on the raft, moving forward with every initial wave before allowing the seventh wave to push him away from the island. The wave carries him far enough into the ocean that he eventually reaches land and, after a few minor setbacks, finds a happy ending.
“You are the seventh wave: the most powerful, furthest travelling, and unstoppable wave in the set.”
For Seventh-Wave®, this story encapsulates everything we want to express (minus the wrongful imprisonment thing). Let’s liken the island to a place where you feel stuck in your career, professionally or personally. Jumping into the ocean represents the leap of faith you must take in beginning your journey with Seventh-Wave’s® programme: it may seem daunting, but you must trust that the process will lead you to your destination. The first six waves that push Papillon’s raft represent Seventh-Wave’s® six workshop programme, helping you little by little to achieve you goals, and move away from the rut you may have found yourself in. Finally, the seventh wave represents the momentum you will gain from these workshops, and the newfound power you have to push yourself the rest of the way, needing no help from us.
The name is apt, as it puts the focus on you. We may push you 60% of the way, but the final 40% comes from your own power and velocity which has been built up through our programme. In this way, you are the seventh wave: the most powerful, furthest travelling, and unstoppable wave in the set. After the programme, you leave us behind with no looking back, bound ceaselessly towards the shore with unending momentum.
At that table in 2010, all of these ideas came to a point, and that solidified both the name and the overall concept of the company you now know as Seventh-Wave®. Something that fits together so perfectly as this name and concept cannot be questioned. Just as these wave patterns were undeniable for Papillon, so too is the method we employ with Seventh-Wave®. It’s worked for thousands of people across the world, and it will work for you, too. We promise.
